Job Summary
Toxicologist I

The County has Immediate Openings in the Medical Examiner's Office.

Future Salary Increases
** June 26, 2026 - 3.97% increase to base pay (3.50% Across-the-Board + 0.47% Market Increase)

** June 25, 2027 - 3.47% increase to base pay (3.00% Across-the-Board + 0.47% Market Increase)

Toxicologists are professional laboratory scientists responsible for conducting chemical and toxicological analysis as part of the investigation to determine the cause of death. Toxicologist I is the entry level class of the series. Incumbents work under immediate supervision and are expected to perform examination and analytical work in a progressively more independent manner. These classes are allocated only to the Office of the Medical Examiner.

The Ideal Candidate will:
  • Maintain records and prepare definitive reports on laboratory findings
  • Analyze and interpret results from tests
  • Maintain scientific records and reports on laboratory findings
  • Make mathematical calculations relevant to analytical laboratory studies
  • Present technical testimony in court, communicate effectively with technical expertise on both lay and technical levels
  • Provides responsive, high quality service to County employees, representatives of outside agencies and members of the public by providing accurate, complete and up-to-date information, in a courteous, efficient and timely manner

Education and/or Experience

Education, training, and/or experience that demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above. Required education and experience:
  1. Must be State of California Of Public Health Title 17 proficient as a Forensic Alcohol Analyst within one year of hire, AND,
  2. A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university, or a certified foreign studies equivalency in chemistry, biochemistry, a physical or life science, or a closely related field.


Certification/Registration

Must meet State of California qualifications as a Forensic Alcohol Analyst within one year of hire.

Evaluation
