Job Description

SUMMARY:

The School Social Worker completes individual assessments and recommendations on students referred for evaluations. The School Social Worker participates in meetings such as METs and IEPs, and assists in developing student behavior assessments and intervention plans. The School Social Worker assists with crisis intervention, parent and staff training, improving school climate, student support systems, accessing community agency resources, providing short-term intervention to students and/or families, and other strategies to maximize the students’ learning experience. Responsible for providing support for building-wide implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in a multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) framework.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s degree from a graduate school of social work program approved by the Michigan Board of Education
  • Currently licensed with the Michigan Department of Licensure and Regulatory Affairs
  • Capable of developing individualized programs for students with unique social-emotional needs 
  • Full or temporary approval as a school social worker in Michigan, or ability to obtain required credentials
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated experience in creating and providing positive behavior supports for students in an educational setting
  • Demonstrated success providing in-service training to staff and parents
  • Demonstrated ability to work within an interdisciplinary concept
  • Demonstrated experience conducting functional behavioral assessments
  • Demonstrated experience writing and implementing behavioral intervention plans
 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

  • Provide a problem-solving service to children and their families through individual, group and community social work methods, so as to enable those served to cope with problems adversely affecting the ability of children to make optimal use of the educational experience
  • Serve as liaison between school, home, and the community in building and maintaining positive relationships
  • Coordinate and develops resources within and outside the school system for use by children, their families and school personnel
  • Proactively contribute as an interdisciplinary team member within the context of METs and IEPs
  • Collaborate with principals, teachers and other school personnel to improve use of existing school programs and procedures, as well as to plan and implement new programs and procedures related to the educational, social, and emotional needs of children
  • Provide direct therapy and intervention services, including crisis intervention
  • Assist with universal screening, risk assessment, and threat assessment procedures and practices
  • Use data based decision making to lead a problem-solving model in dealing with student academic and behavioral concerns
  • Foster professional development through in-service education of school social work staff/school-based mental health staff, interns, paraprofessionals, and other school personnel through planning, conducting, and participating in workshops
  • Consult and cooperate with school psychologists, school counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers in assessing the mental and emotional health of the individual student having school difficulty and in evolving appropriate remedial plans
  • Assist districts in the implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports within an MTSS framework
  • Adapt and function independently within several school districts
  • Complete all required reporting and documentation related to the position within specified timelines
  • Model continuous learning and use best practice in educational improvement
  • Provide information to local districts regarding state and federal initiatives and legislation 
  • Perform other duties as assigned
 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficiency in computer/software use including Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Zoom
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral/written communication skills
  • Must effectively orchestrate multiple activities/projects simultaneously to accomplish goals and use resources effectively  
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of organization and efficient time management
  • Must successfully adapt/function independently within a variety of school districts
 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

  • Must keep the affairs of Marquette-Alger RESA and LEAs confidential at all times
  • Must exercise confidentiality and sound judgment in dealing with local districts, staff, students, and parents
  • Position routinely requires travel to local school districts in Marquette and Alger counties, as well as possible assignments within other counties in the Upper Peninsula
  • Occasional travel to other areas of the State may be required


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Full time position. Must have regular and reliable job attendance, performance, and the physical ability to do the job
