The CFT is the California affiliate of the AFT, AFL-CIO, representing education workers in public and private schools and colleges, from early childhood through higher education.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, values-driven Controller to join our leadership team and support our mission through sound financial management and transparent stewardship of union resources.

The Controller plays a vital leadership role in ensuring the financial integrity and accountability of our union. Under the direction of the Secretary-Treasurer, the Controller oversees all accounting and fiscal operations, including the management of per capita payments from local affiliates, budget development, payroll, and compliance reporting.

As a key member of the union’s administrative leadership team, the Controller provides accurate, transparent financial information that supports member trust, organizational planning, and long-term sustainability. The Controller supervises accounting and finance staff, fosters a collaborative work environment, and ensures financial systems align with the union’s mission and values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and financial reporting.
  • Manage and reconcile per capita payments from local affiliates, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and open communication with local treasurers and officers.
  • Administer and oversee the union’s ADP payroll system, including payroll processing, benefits reporting, and related compliance requirements.
  • Prepare and present regular financial statements, reports, and forecasting as needed, with the Secretary-Treasurer, to the President, governing boards, and membership committees.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process, working collaboratively with division officers, department directors, and leadership teams.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable labor, tax, and reporting regulations, including DOL, IRS, and state requirements.
  • Coordinate annual audits and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard union assets.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies and systems that promote transparency, accountability, and efficiency.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate accounting and administrative staff, supporting professional growth and operational excellence.
  • Provide fiscal analysis and recommendations for contract negotiations, per capita adjustments, leased equipment and building maintenance, and strategic initiatives.
  • Collaborate with union leadership to align financial practices with organizational priorities and member interests.

Qualifications
Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting or financial management experience, including at least 3 years in a supervisory or management role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of GAAP and fund accounting principles.
  • Experience managing per capita tracking and reconciliation with affiliated locals.
  • Proficiency with ADP payroll administration and related HR systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead, set clear expectations and coach staff.
  • Maintain collaborative and transparent relationships with colleagues, officers, and members.

Preferred:

  • CPA, CMA, CIA, EA, or equivalent certification.
  • MA in finance, accounting, or business administration.
  • Experience in a labor union, nonprofit, or public-sector environment.
  • Familiarity with labor financial reporting requirements (LM filings, Form 990, etc.).
  • Experience working with the governing board of an IRC Section 501(c)(5) or similar organization. Knowledge of the accounting and reporting requirements for IRC Section 527 organizations. Knowledge of IRC Section 411 and 415 defined benefit pension trust account requirements.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of organized labor and public education.
  • Familiarity with union membership systems or dues-tracking software.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $130,000 – $170,000, commensurate with experience.
