Job Description

Join ACE as a Community Organizer and make a direct impact on the lives of individuals and families needing critical support. The Safe Passage Initiative will focus on implementing Safe Passage services near selected middle and high schools, introducing the Safe Haven Initiative in partnership with community stakeholders, local businesses, and supporting high-risk students

 

In this role, you’ll work with local businesses to serve as student safety zones in emergencies, promoting safe haven locations through student outreach and school communications. As a liaison, you’ll foster collaboration and build bridges within the community, helping to create safer and more supportive passages for those in need. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Engage nearby businesses and secure their participation in the Safe Haven initiative and distribute and place Safe Passage Safe Haven placards in participating businesses.
  • Provide basic orientation to business owners/staff on how to respond when students seek safety.
  • Fosters positive relationships with school administrators, teachers, security, PTAs, community members, partner organizations, and local gangs.
  • Participate in cultural and community-building activities/events.
  • Share updates through newsletters, social media, and local events.
  • Establish or support a Student Ambassador program to empower youth leadership and boost program visibility.
  • Coordinate directly with local middle and/or high schools served by ACE.
  • Attend and participate in school and community events relevant to student safety.
  • Collaborate with neighborhood councils, CBOs, and faith-based institutions to raise awareness of the Safe Passage strategy.
  • Facilitate monthly safety meetings with school staff, local businesses, parents, and Intervention partners.
  • Work closely with Safe Passage Workers and Community Intervention Workers to ensure safety updates and community-specific concerns are addressed.
  • Enter data into databases, maintain accurate case files, and assist in generating reports to meet funders/ACE/ECM and Medi-Cal compliance requirements.
  • Work closely with the Program Manager to develop strategic plans to recruit potential Safe Passage allies for the reduction of violence within the community.
  • Participate in all Intervention events and facilitate workshops, including Summer Night Lights.
  • Promote safe haven locations through student-led outreach and school communications.
  • Serve as a point of contact in addressing community violence issues and provide the necessary resources to assist those involved.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Is sensitive to the community, cultural, and personal dignity of program participants and is able to successfully engage, assess, and plan services for participants typical of the program’s target population. 
  • Recognizes appropriate boundaries and limitations on interactions with program participants and their families and the need to maintain professional standards and practices. 
  • Is familiar with standard approaches to accurate participant record keeping, including timely charting, notation formats, content limitations, and confidentiality practices.
  • Possesses knowledge of programs, regulations, and procedures regarding human services, social services, justice, and workforce development.
  • Knowledge of community/gang dynamics within the GRYD Zone.
  • Able to operate within ACE’s designated GRYD zone, exposing oneself to gangs found within the zone.
  • Able to work in assigned locations that may expose oneself to hazardous conditions or in extreme physical discomfort or distress.
  • Ability to assess conditions and responsiveness to interventions.
  • Possesses necessary de-escalation skills to provide crisis and community violence intervention in the community and schools.
  • General proficiency in navigating and using technology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking throughout facilities.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to bend, lift, stretch, climb, and crawl to provide services.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent community intervention experience
  • Preferred but not required: Previous justice-involvement 
  • Formal gang intervention training (e.g., LAVITA) preferred
  • Spanish language skills, verbal and written, preferred
  • Possess a current California Driver’s License, clean DMV record & adequate auto insurance. 
  • Must submit to a Department of Justice Criminal background check 
  • Initial TB employment clearance is required

The anticipated pay for candidates who will work in California is $28.85/hr. The offered pay to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to, years of experience within the job, years of experience within the required industry, education, etc.
